Genetics pioneer Dr. Suzanne Kamel-Reid to retire from The Princess Margaret at end of 2018

The Princess Margaret’s Dr. Suzanne Kamel-Reid has announced she will be retiring from University Health Network (UHN) on Dec. 31, 2018.

Dr. Kamel-Reid has been the Clinical Genetics Department Head within the Laboratory Medicine Program since its inception in 1990. The program is currently the largest cancer genetics testing program in Canada, offering advanced molecular diagnostic services and enabling personalized treatment for patients not just at UHN, but across Canada.

One of Dr. Kamel-Reid’s areas of research included how a patient's blood could predict their response to cancer treatment.

She has also been instrumental in developing The Princess Margaret Advanced Molecular Diagnostics lab and has been very active in advising Cancer Care Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care about new genetic tests and technologies.

Dr. Kamel-Reid has also been open about her own journey with breast cancer.

A search will be conducted to find a new Genetics Department Head in the coming months.
