An Unbreakable Journey Through Music and Resilience
David Glabais, one of Toronto’s most renowned and beloved music teachers, faced a life-changing diagnosis in October 2023 at age 61—a right-tonsil tumour, throat cancer. It began with strange sensations while swallowing and swelling in his neck, leading to the shocking diagnosis. Initially consumed by fear, he gradually transformed that anxiety into unbreakable will and determination as he began treatment at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

David’s treatment was rigorous—35 rounds of radiation and five rounds of chemotherapy, alongside participation in a clinical trial under the care of Dr. John Cho, Radiation Oncologist, Clinician Investigator and Cancer Clinical Research Unit. While his days became a blur of appointments and medical jargon, through it all, the support and care from The Princess Margaret and the rhythm of music remained his anchor. Music not only provided an escape but also served as a means to process the emotional and physical trauma of his diagnosis. He found strength in his resolve to continue teaching and inspiring others.

“I was uncertain about how I would proceed in my current occupation, but I became determined to press on and continue my teaching and get back to performing,” said David. “Given what I’ve gone through, I’m more determined than ever to help others and give back to the community through fundraisers to create a world free from the fear of cancer.”

David’s willful determination has culminated in his most ambitious and important annual concert to date, Unbreakable, at the iconic Massey Hall in Toronto on Friday, November 15, 2024. Performing a hand-picked set list of classic pop and rock hit songs, alongside talented surprise performers to be announced, the event aims to celebrate hope and raise funds to help support life-saving cancer research at The Princess Margaret – one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.
