Meet Gordon
In 2023, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. I had never heard of it before, and the diagnosis was overwhelming. But even in those early, uncertain days, I found hope, through the incredible care I received at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and the constant support of my family and friends.Having direct access to a hematologist and oncologist who specializes in Multiple Myeloma has been life-changing. Their expertise and compassion helped guide me through treatment, reminding me that I was never facing this journey alone.
Returning to art was an important step in my recovery and signalled a return to a degree of normalcy. An important part of being an artist for me is telling stories that matter, strong narratives make work meaningful. Earlier this year I challenged myself to share my most personal story through my paintings, my journey with cancer. Many of these works explore nature to express the feeling of freedom I felt after months of quarantine due to a suppressed immune system.
The painting I’m contributing to the 25th Anniversary of the Doves of Hope campaign continues that body of work. I’m excited to show how I’ve incorporated the Dove theme into this piece, a subtle symbol woven into the composition, and to have it auctioned alongside other works that share stories of hope. I’m honoured to give back to The Princess Margaret for the care and support I’ve received.
Every Dove tells a story. Mine is one of gratitude, recovery, and belief in the power of care and community. Thank you for helping Let Hope Fly.
