Thoracic Oncologist Dr. Adrian Sacher has been working relentlessly since 2018 to provide lung cancer patients with drastically improved prognoses and quality of life. In the past, those with Stage 4 lung cancer had an average life expectancy of about one year after being diagnosed. The goal of Dr. Sacher’s groundbreaking work is to change cancer into a disease that always responds to treatment, allowing patients to live for many years even with a Stage 4 diagnosis. By developing targeted treatments and immunotherapies along with leading clinical trials, Dr. Sacher is actively changing the way we treat lung cancer.

“It is extraordinary to be able to be part of developing and using these new treatments to help cancer patients.”

MJ was one of those patients. When he lost his voice right before a trip to India to attend a wedding, his father-in-law became concerned and urged him to see a doctor. MJ followed his advice, and then his life took a drastic turn—he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Upon returning to Canada, he was referred to The Princess Margaret, where doctors discovered that his cancer had progressed to Stage 4 and spread to his brain.

With two children aged five and seven, MJ knew that nothing short of the best available treatment would be acceptable. When chemotherapy and radiation didn’t work, Dr. Sacher decided to test him for a rare genetic mutation. If he had it, MJ would be eligible for a new drug that offered hope for late-stage cancer patients. The test was positive.

Within a couple of weeks of treatment, MJ’s energy levels returned to normal. Thanks to a combination of this groundbreaking drug and one surgery, he is now cancer-free.
“If it weren’t for Dr. Sacher and The Princess Margaret, I wouldn’t be here today.”
