Janice has played an integral role in supporting The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation through her thoughtful guidance as a volunteer board member of The PMCF Board of Directors for over a decade.
She has held many leadership positions throughout her distinguished career, most notably as the Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Royal Bank of Canada, where she retired after 31 years.
Janice was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada for her leadership and mentorship in banking, and for her commitment to community engagement, notably in education and healthcare. She currently serves on the boards of a number of corporate and not-for-profit organizations. Now, Janice is lending her exceptional experience to her role as Campaign Co-Chair for the Carry The Fire campaign.
What inspired you to get involved with The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation?
The Princess Margaret saved my life. When I was going through my cancer treatment, I received the very best care from the doctors, nurses, and everyone working at the Cancer Centre. So, when I was declared cancer-free, I wanted to make sure that other people would benefit from the same excellent care that I received. And being a Campaign Co-Chair is also my own way of giving back and saying thank you to The Princess Margaret.
What excites you most about the Carry The Fire campaign?
I'm very happy that we've set the fundraising goal high. A campaign of this scale should be ambitious because the opportunity in front of us is extraordinary. The Princess Margaret has the people, the expertise, and the community support to make this goal achievable. What gives me confidence is knowing how many people believe in this mission and want to be part of advancing cancer research and care.
What's one challenge that feels most important to you and how can philanthropy help?
I believe prevention is one of the biggest challenges in cancer care today. Too often, by the time someone reaches a cancer centre, they're already facing a diagnosis. I look forward to the potential to change that through earlier detection and prevention. With advances in AI, data science, and precision medicine, we're getting closer to identifying cancer risks before disease develops. Philanthropy is critical to accelerating that progress and helping redefine what's possible in cancer prevention.
What about The Princess Margaret gives you hope for the future?
What gives me hope is that The Princess Margaret already has the world-class talent, research, and reputation to lead the future of cancer care. We've built a strong foundation, and now we have an opportunity to take philanthropy to a new level. By bringing more people into this mission, we can fund the discoveries and innovations that simply wouldn't be possible through traditional funding alone.
What stands out most to you about The Princess Margaret?
It's the people that stand out the most to me. Across The Princess Margaret, there is an extraordinary commitment to patients and families, and a shared belief that every interaction can make a difference. What I find remarkable is the optimism and sense of purpose that exists throughout the Cancer Centre. Even when a cure isn't possible, there's always an opportunity to improve someone's quality of life, and that commitment is felt in everything they do.
