Donor Spotlight: CIBC

As a breast cancer survivor, Jane Wilson has personally experienced the benefits that Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s Healing Beyond the Body program offers patients and their families.

Healing Beyond the Body is a unique, volunteer-driven support program that focuses on providing emotional and psychological support for patients receiving treatment at The Princess Margaret.

“When you come to the hospital for the first time and you don’t know what’s wrong, the anxiety is overwhelming. And then, when you get the worst news, the fear is overwhelming,” Jane says.

In April, CIBC committed $500,000 over five years in support of the program. Jane, an executive at the bank, believes the support that Healing Beyond The Body provides patients is priceless. CIBC’s contribution is an extension of its culture of care that supports an organization that embodies health, community and family.  It will enable the volunteer program to continue to grow as an integral part of The Princess Margaret.

When Jane was a cancer patient, she remembers receiving great advice on how to cope with the disease. That included connecting with volunteers who had gone through treatment themselves and could share details of various side effects and offer comfort and hope.

“It makes a difference,” says Jane. “You don’t feel as anxious. It eases your mind, and that makes it easier to get through the treatment and achieving the goal of surviving.”
