owto17_284x100.pngThe Rexall™ OneWalk to Conquer Cancer™ announces $4 million raised for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Since 2003, more than $176 million has been raised by Walk participants in support of cancer research and clinical trials to deliver Future Care Now at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

This year 1,734 participants walked either 15 kilometres at the City Nights event on Friday, September 6th, or 15 or 25 kilometres at the Day Trip event on Saturday, September 7. For the first time ever, Walkers headed North of the city, and walked the trails through Boyd Conservation Area and Kortright Centre for Conservation.

“Nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and today, more than 60% will survive. In the last 20 years, thanks to the help and support from our Walkers, we have seen transformational progress in cancer care. Although the incidence and prevalence of cancer continues to increase, advances in the precision and personalization of care have resulted in improved outcomes and quality of life for patients,” said Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz, Medical Director, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

“There are many reasons why the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has achieved its world-class standing as one of the top 5 cancer research centres -- our scientists, researchers and oncologists never stop searching for Future Care Now. Future Care Now represents a commitment to deliver the very best treatments available today, while accelerating discovery of tomorrow’s breakthroughs through research at The Princess Margaret. And our Walkers help raise vital funds to support this world leading research,” said Michael Burns, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

“Thank you to our sponsors, especially title partner Rexall and founding partner CIBC, whose support enables The Princess Margaret to invest more funds raised into our core cancer research programs. Thank you to our community of walkers, donors, crew and volunteers who continue to show their commitment to help conquer cancer in our lifetime,” added Burns.

The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer brings together communities of cancer survivors and their supporters who spend months fundraising and training in order to participate. OneWalk allows participants to choose their distance and to fundraise to support one of 17 unique cancer funds including the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Discovery Research Fund.

"As a mother, you never want to hear the words 'I have cancer' from your child. Those are the words I heard in January 2018 from my 32-year-old son, Mark,” said Ruth, OneWalk participant.

“Thanks to the incredible treatment plan and care provided at The Princess Margaret, Mark celebrated one-year of completing his chemotherapy this July. Mark and I Walk to give back to Mark's healthcare team and to help change the outcomes of future cancer patients and their families," added Ruth.

Join us next year for The Weekend to Conquer Cancer, an exciting, multi-day event that takes place the weekend of September 12, 2020. Friday night’s City Nights 15KM walk resonates with corporate organizations and community leaders, Saturday’s Day Trip is a scenic, trail blazing walk mainly on nature paths and we’ll launch a new family-centric fundraiser, meant to inspire the next generation of philanthropists. All events during The Weekend to Conquer Cancer benefit the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. Funds raised will help elevate the impact our donors have on the next frontier of progress. Future Care Now represents a commitment to deliver the very best treatments available today, while accelerating discovery of tomorrow’s breakthroughs through research at The Princess Margaret and across our global network.
