Kirsh Humanitarian Awards - 2013 Winners

A kind word, the gift of music, a warm smile on a day that couldn’t get any harder have all created feelings of joy, happiness and comfort to the many patients at The Princess Margaret.  It is because of the dedication and passion of the staff and volunteers at providing such exemplary care that we choose to honour them at The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian Awards.
After having experienced exceptional care for their father and husband Gerald, the Kirsh family wanted to do something special to honour the many staff and volunteers who assisted them on their cancer journey.  In collaboration with The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre they established The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian Awards.

These awards give patients and their families an opportunity to say “thank you” in a unique way by nominating any staff or volunteer who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide outstanding care.  Every year the 7th floor atrium is packed with patients, their families, staff and volunteers to honour the nominees and this year was no exception.  The 13th annual awards had a record high of 32 nominations where two individuals are selected from this well deserving group.
Congratulations to Ahmadreza Baki-Jafarzadeh and Dr. Raya Leibowitz-Amit as the 2013 recipients!

Ahmadreza Baki-Jafarzadeh is a Chemo Day Care Nurse and is truly a light for the many patients he treats evident in the words from some of his nominators “he has always treated patients as a whole person, not one with a measured time to live” “he goes above and beyond to make the patient feel at ease”.
Medical Oncology Fellow, Dr. Raya Leibowitz-Amit is not just a clinician to her patients but is their friend and confidante “her expertise, warmth and compassion leave a lasting impression on all those whose lives she touches” (she) “treats me as though I am a member of her family with affection and respect” were just a few words included in her nomination.
Once again, congratulations to both of our recipients and to all of our nominees as it is truly an honour to be recognized in this special way.
We invite staff, patients and their families to nominate any Princess Margaret Cancer Centre employee or volunteer that they have seen provide exemplary and compassionate care.  If you would like to learn more about the awards process please click here, complete an online nomination form or e-mail for more information.
