TELUS today announced the extension of its 'Go Pink' campaign in support of breast cancer
detection until December 31, 2010. Since May, TELUS has donated $25 from the sale of its
exclusive pink BlackBerry devices to local breast cancer organizations across Canada to help
bring early breast cancer detection equipment to our communities. The announcement was

mutation known to upset the way cells make energy fuels
the cancer in a type of leukemia called AML (acute

process ('onco metabolite') has previously been identified
as a factor in brain tumors (gliomas).

Dr. Ben Neel awarded the Premier's Summit Award for medical research
On Tuesday, May 12, Dr. Ben Neel was awarded the
Premier's Summit Award for medical research. Dr. Neel

The Taylor Cup Pond Hockey Championship
Its time to lace em up and hit the ice again for the 3rd annual Taylor Cup Pond Hockey Championship. The puck drops on February 1, 2008, when 36 hockey teams will face off on Sparrow Lake, just north of Orillia. The weekend event is held in memory of Judy Taylor who lost her battle against cancer in 2003. Proceeds go to The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundations Cancer Research Fund. This years goal is to raise more than $100,000.

IBM World Community Grid Squeezes Decades of Cancer Research into Two Years
The research team, led by Dr. Igor Jurisica at the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), and scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network, are the first from Canada to use the World Community Grid, a network of PCs and laptops with the power equivalent to one of the globe's top five fastest supercomputers.

Bladder cancer study determines optimal treatment to maximize life expectancy
Cancer specialists and researchers at Princess Margaret Hospital, University Health Network (UHN), are tackling an ongoing controversy about the best way to treat an aggressive form of bladder cancer – immediate radical surgery or a more conservative initial approach using immunotherapy?
To answer that question, Drs. Girish Kulkarni, Shabbir Alibhai and colleagues calculated the life expectancy and the quality of life expected from the two treatment methods. The team used a decision-analysis tool – the Markov model – a first for this form of bladder cancer.

Yesterday, Princess Margaret Hospital announced that these women and men raised $17,300,000 in Toronto’s 5th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer® event, a 60-kilometre walk to raise funds for breast cancer research and care in Toronto. The 6th annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Hospital is already planned for Sept. 5-7, 2008.

Record 5,521 walkers raise $17.3 million in 5th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event
Today, Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) announced that 5,521 walkers raised $17,300,000 in its annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event. This multi-day event is the largest single-event breast cancer fundraiser in Canada and this year, boasts a record number of walkers for its five year history. Spurred on by this continued growth in participation and support, the 6th annual The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Toronto is already planned for September 5-7, 2008.

Princess Margaret Hospital unveils Commemorative Weekend to End Breast Cancer Statue
Walkers in the fifth annual WEBC event this weekend now have a newly erected statue to recognize their fundraising efforts, at the entrance of Princess Margaret Hospital. On permanent display, the statue also acknowledges the many women and men who have fought breast cancer.
The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Commemorative Sculpture was unveiled today in front of the hospital in the presence of walkers, volunteers, breast cancer survivors, as well as friends and family of loved ones who fought but succumbed to the disease. Princess Margaret Hospital staff, including those responsible for the event’s beginnings in Toronto, were also witnesses to the emotional event.

One-step breast cancer treatment combines radiation surgery at PMH
Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) breast cancer specialists are using a new way to treat patients by delivering a one-time dose of radiation during surgery. The procedure, called intraoperative radiation therapy, takes less than an hour and eliminates the need for further radiation treatments.
On May 17, the PMH team combined the expertise of surgeons, radiation medicine specialists (radiation oncologists, physicists and therapists) and nurses to perform its first procedure. It marked the first time the portable intrabeam radiotherapy machine that makes this procedure possible has been used in Canada. The PMH team has since treated two more patients.

PMH Researchers Activate New Cancer Drug Using Light and Oxygen
PMH researchers have developed a new cancer drug, triggered by a laser light. The process, known as photodynamic therapy (PDT), kills only cancer cells, leaving surrounding, healthy cells intact. The study is a collaboration between senior PMH scientists Drs. Gang Zheng and Brian Wilson. It was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences earlier this week.

Michael Burgess Performs 10th Annual Concert for Cancer Patients
Acclaimed Canadian tenor Michael Burgess will perform Wednesday, April 13 at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) as part of the hospital’s weekly Music in the Atrium series. This will be the 10th annual appearance for Mr. Burgess, the performer who launched the program, and his long-time accompanist Doug Riley.
