Congratulations to Bill Atkins and Dr. Santhosh Thyagu as the 2012 recipients of The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian award!!

The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian Award recognizes the outstanding compassionate care provided at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to patients and their families. The family of the late Gerald Kirsh established the awards as a tribute to the exceptional care they witnessed while he was undergoing treatment at The Princess Margaret. These awards help grateful cancer patients and their families express their thanks to the dedicated employees and volunteers who have provided special care during their treatment.

It is truly an honour just to be nominated and these awards are a celebration of the many wonderful staff and volunteers who care for our patients. Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has celebrated these awards for the past twelve years and once again the 7th floor atrium was packed with staff, patients and their families excited to cheer on our nominees at the November 5th celebration.

Bill Atkins has worked at The Princess Margaret for over 30 years as a friendly face dedicated to helping all patients and staff in his role as security guard. “He always goes that extra mile. He remembers names and always asked people how they are feeling. He truly cares” were just a few words included in his nomination.

Dr. Santhosh Thyagu is a Clinical Fellow in the area of Medical Oncology and Haematology whose gentle patience and encouragement did not go unnoticed by one of his patients. “…the amazing kindness and understanding that you showed, shone through to us like a definitive ray of hope…”

Congratulations once again to all of our nominees!
