Patient Stories
Joseph Calabrese - Cancer Survivor

|
Joseph Calabrese, a patient of Dr. Jonathan Irish, had successful image-guided surgery a few months ago to remove a tumour the size of a tennis ball that began growing on his lower jaw and eventually spread deep into his throat.
“I suffered for two years until I could barely eat or swallow or sleep. Then I met Dr. Irish,” says the 43-year-old heavy equipment operator and father of two young girls. “He immediately told me that he could fix me and that I was going to be okay. I went home a few days after my surgery and I’ve been feeling great ever since.”
Dr. Jonathan Irish, head of surgical services at Princess Margaret Hospital and a specialist in head and neck surgery, agrees: “Image-guided surgery is a huge benefit in cancer surgery treatment. These new tools will enable us to target tumours with greater precision and avoid critical normal tissues resulting in fewer side effects to our patients.”
For patients, doing imaging right in the operating room delivers better results, less damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs, and speedier recovery.
