The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer

Since 2008, the Ride To Conquer Cancer has raised over $80 million. This two-day 200 km+ cycling event from Toronto to Niagara Falls has become Canada's most successful cycling fundraiser - an amazing achievement for all involved. After expenses, over $54 million has been directed to the highest priority cancer research initiatives at The Princess Margaret. The return to Foundation of over 66% far exceeds what is considered by the industry as an acceptable return for an event of this magnitude. To attract a large number of registrations and donations and run an excellent and safe event requires significant investment in marketing and logistics.

Princess Margaret uses a social enterprise model across many of its fundraising activities. That means we outsource much of the event logistics, marketing development, fundraising support and execution to firms who specialize in these areas. While we do have some excellent corporate partners, there are still many expenses the event incurs for both success and safety -- everything from feeding participants to securing police support to rental of venues, showers and port-a-potties.

The success of the Ride in Toronto has allowed the event to expand to Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. The Ride also appeals to people outside of Canada as riders from 19 states and six countries have participated.

These are big bold events and it takes significant funds to promote an event like this to get the participants and donations, and then to support and run these events. It is only through a number of different and large events like this that The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is able to sustain its research program and support its position as one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

In the end what matters is that over $54 million of net funds has been raised to support the world-leading cancer research programs at The Princess Margaret, all focused on advancing new therapies and understanding of this awful disease - to extend and save more lives.

All audited details from the 2008 through 2011 Rides are available online in the PMHF Annual Reports. Financials on the 2012 Ride will be available in the next Annual Report, which will be published in September, 2013.

Impact of the Ride to Conquer Cancer
The Ride funds are being used to support and ensure the sustainability of the leading cancer research initiatives at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. A big focus is on the Personalized Cancer Medicine program. Personalized Cancer Medicine at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is a multifaceted approach to care that focuses on the unique nature of each patient: finding the right treatment for the right patient at the right time. By basing treatment on a better understanding of the unique character of each cancer and each patient, we will be able to provide people with more effective and less toxic treatments. We have three general areas where these funds are directed (within the various cancer site groups):

Personalized Cancer Medicine includes all of our efforts in the following important areas.

Detecting cancer earlier
If cancer is detected at an early stage, the prognosis for a complete remission is much improved. Our research teams are working on many early detection initiatives, including:

• Developing and testing better imaging equipment so small tumours can be seen more clearly

• Identifying unique ‘markers’ of cancers that can be detected in blood and serum tests

Diagnosing with more precision
New equipment and procedures that determine the specific genetic mutations or changes that gave rise to a patient’s cancer are being tested at The Princess Margaret. This information will enable the experts to recommend the optimal combination of drug and other therapies for successfully treating each patient.

Targeting treatment for each patient
Improved surgical, radiation and drug treatments will target only the cancer and leave healthy tissue alone, minimizing toxic side effects. Our scientists and doctors are testing new treatments that can more effectively detect and eradicate cancer cells leading to more durable cures.

Supporting patients and families throughout their cancer journey
Being well-informed about their disease, the treatment they will receive and the side effects that can be expected gives patients and their families more confidence, reduces anxiety and leads to improved quality of life. Our award-winning survivorship, patient education and psychosocial support programs need to be expanded so that more patients can be empowered throughout their personal cancer journey.
