Invest In Research

Dr. Malcolm MooreThe work of creating personalized cancer medicine is being driven by donors, and some of our most passionate donors are part of a group called Invest in Research that supports important research ‘in the funnel’ that urgently needs funding.

Started by a former patient, Invest in Research is a unique program that brings together a group of donors to vote on projects they’d like to fund. Members like the direct impact they can have, and appreciate the opportunity to hear from the researchers in person.

Last Wednesday was the annual meeting where the 25 current group members heard back from research they funded last year. Dr. Steven Gallinger spoke passionately about the work that he and Dr. Malcolm Moore are doing to improve treatments for pancreatic cancer patients. They are investigating a link between mutations of the BRCA2 gene (commonly associated with breast and ovarian cancer) and pancreatic cancer. Drs. Moore and Gallinger want to determine if combining chemotherapy agents will prolong life, and with a higher quality of life, in those BRCA2 patients. In the upcoming year, they plan to test 300 advanced pancreatic cancer patients to qualify their theory.

With every bit of research like this that gets done, we are closer to finding long-lasting solutions. A hearty thanks to the Invest in Research group members.
