CPPIB Domestiques … riding to benefit cancer patients across Canada

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is a professional investment management organization that invests the funds not needed by the Canada Pension Plan to pay current benefits. Their critical purpose is to help provide the foundation upon which 18 million CPP contributors and beneficiaries build financial security in their retirement.

Employees from this organization closely follow demographic trends in Canada and around the world, and review volumes of statistics related to health and wellness. They understand that a diagnosis of cancer is one of the big reasons many Canadians may not get to the retirement they spend so much of their life anticipating.

That’s why three years ago, a group from CPPIB decided to form a team and participate as CPPIB Domestiques in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. ‘Domestique’ refers to a road bicycle racer who works for the benefit of their team and leader. In this event, however, the entire team is working for the benefit of cancer patients. Eric Wetlaufer is the Team Captain and he explains, “We’re participating because we know that cancer is too big a disease to ignore. It affects everyone—ourselves, our parents, siblings, children or friends. Sadly, maybe all of the above. By riding in this event, we are doing something about it.”

Last year, CPPIB Domestiques was a team composed of 13 riders, but for the 2015 Ride, they have more than doubled their team to 32 riders. They have done a great job of spreading the word, and recruiting work colleagues as well as their family members. “Participating in this event is an awesome triumph in a physical sense and emotionally as well,” says Wetlaufer. “We feel confident reaching out to others and encouraging them to take part.”

The team is hoping that all of their team members can exceed the minimum fundraising level by 15 percent or more, and they are planning social events and group spin classes to encourage one another in their fundraising efforts.
