UHN Employees have Impact

One of the many special ingredients that has made the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer a successful fundraiser is the enthusiasm and participation of the very people who make The Princess Margaret one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. Many riders single out the participation of so many Princess Margaret staff and the opportunity to ride alongside them as one of the highlights of the Ride for them.

“Our physicians, nurses, therapists, and support staff are doing double duty in the mission to conquer cancer in our lifetime,” explains Steve Merker, Chief Cycling Officer for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “By day, they work in the trenches in the war on cancer trying to create better outcomes for patients, and we’re very grateful that they allocate some of their precious spare time to fundraise and train for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.”

Forming teams like The Drug Peddlers, The Heme Team, Team SurgeOn, and Cell Cyclers, they are there to challenge themselves physically, contribute to the fundraising efforts, and to say thank you to the other riders for helping to raise the funds needed to support their research work. A large number of UHN employees spend the weekend in the medical tents tending to riders who are feeling the side effects from the physical challenge.

Dr. Hans Messner, a Senior Scientist at The Princess Margaret and the Former Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program, has participated in the Ride every year since its inception in 2008 (and he is consistently one of the early riders crossing the finish line!) “It is a personal objective to remain fit, and I hope by participating to set a good example. Physical fitness achieved through activities like cycling is the ultimate rehabilitation after cancer treatment.”

Dr. Igor Jurisica, is a senior scientists leading a team of bioinformatics specialists who are helping scientists and clinicians at The Princess Margaret distill the enormous amount of data generated by health and scientific research studies and turn it into knowledge that can be acted on in the mission to conquer cancer. When the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer first launched, Dr. Jurisica formed a team together with two of the industry partners working with The Princess Margaret—the IBM-OCI-Roche Integrative Discovery Team. The team has now raised over $250,000 for cancer research.

Thanks to all the UHN staff who support the Ride and continue to make it the successful event that it is!
