Creating the Cancer Centre of the Future in Kuwait

Kuwait Cancer Control Centre7/28/2014

In January 2011, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre began a formal partnership with the Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC) to provide comprehensive consultation on the provision of cancer care in Kuwait. The partnership is expected to transform cancer care in Kuwait, while providing Princess Margaret Cancer Centre with additional resources to allow us to continue to invest in innovative and world-leading approaches to care that will benefit our patients.

Key deliverables associated with the partnership include:

  • The Princess Margaret developing a 5-year and 10-year strategic plan for the KCCC, the guiding principle of which is patient-centred care
  • Establishment of a ‘Cancer Centre of the Future’
  • Opportunity to establish comprehensive cancer control in Kuwait
  • Establishment of clinical specialization at KCCC
  • Implementation of expanded educational/training initiatives
  • Establishment of psychosocial oncology and palliative care at KCCC
  • Strengthening of laboratory medicine and pathology

The partnership is seen as a key opportunity to strengthen The Princess Margaret’s global impact by creating a cancer centre for the future in Kuwait and, reciprocally, refining our e-skills (e.g. e-consultation, e-mentorship, distance education) and strengthening our multidisciplinary teams (e.g. building something new together, bringing what we learn back). This venture will provide us with a chance to forge new ground in the area of international health and to bring the learnings and gains associated with the project back to strengthen the delivery of our services to patients in Ontario.

In addition to the Cancer Program, University Health Network (of which The Princess Margaret is a part) is planning a partnership with KCCC in medical imaging and investigating opportunities to engage in improving the neuroscience program.
