CLINICAL TRIALS AT THE PRINCESS MARGARET

ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST HIGHLY SKILLED CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD

WHAT IS A CLINICAL TRIAL?

A clinical trial is a research study that tests new ways to prevent, detect or treat cancer or other diseases. One aim is to test new therapies so patients can live longer and better. Other trials focus on preventing and diagnosing the disease.

The Princess Margaret also conducts supportive care clinical trials to explore ways to improve the comfort and quality of life for cancer patients.

CLINICAL TRIALS

PHASE I TRIALS

Canada’s largest first-in-human cancer clinical trial program, conducts early-phase trials and correlative studies with novel anti-cancer agents or combinations.

PM CONSORTIUM

One of 13 U.S. National Cancer Institute supported networks for over 15 years, and a member of the Experimental Therapeutic Clinical Trials Network, which conducts adult Phase I and Phase II clinical trials research across Canada and the United States.

SUPPORTIVE CARE

Largest comprehensive clinical and academic supportive care clinical trials program in Canada, which focuses on quality of life for patients in palliative and end-of-life care.

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY & HEMATOLOGY

As part of the largest medical oncology and hematology program in Canada, our clinicians have extensive experience providing care and research opportunities for patients with common, rare and complex types of cancer. We are a leader in Phase I and Phase II hematology and disease-specific trials.

TUMOUR IMMUNOTHERAPY PROGRAM

Canada’s first and most comprehensive immunotherapy program that translates important scientific discoveries into clinical trials which enable a deeper understanding of how best to harness the host immune system to benefit cancer patients.

CANCER GENOMICS

Investigators study the roles of genes in driving the development of tumours, to predict their behaviours and optimally select therapies best suited to the molecular fingerprint of each patient’s cancer. This program has provided molecular profiling for over 4,000 patients since 2012.

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

Canada’s largest and most highly skilled team with 74 surgical oncologists. Focuses on creating and evaluating new technologies in the operating room to improve patient outcomes through clinical trials.

RADIATION MEDICINE

Our Radiation Medicine Program is a world leader in radiation research aimed at improving the treatment of patients with cancer. The Radiation Medicine clinical research program at The Princess Margaret is the largest in Canada and one of the largest in North America.

‘IF I DIDN’T GET THAT DRUG I WOULD HAVE DIED.’

In 2012, a biopsy of a mole on Alan Taylor’s thigh revealed he had Stage 2 melanoma.

He was referred to The Princess Margaret, where he underwent surgery to remove the mole. One year later, Taylor received an unexpected blow: there was a tumour on his lung. It was Stage 4 melanoma.

Taylor enrolled in an innovative clinical trial that uses a patient’s own immune T-cells to treat the cancer. These specialized cancer fighting cells are called tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes or TILs.

“Within a few days the tumour was gone. I thought it was going to be the home run for me,” says Taylor.

THE PRINCESS MARGARET’S CANCER CLINICAL RESEARCH UNIT (CCRU)

  • The CCRU offers a comprehensive and unique program providing oversight for all clinical research across Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
  • The CCRU is one of North America’s largest cancer research units with 160 staff.
  • This core group is a central, operational resource with access to experts, tools, data and metrics, training, and operational support to deliver clinical research excellence.
  • This unit supports principal investigators and their teams to ensure clinical trials open quickly, efficiently and safely. These teams include Allied Health Professionals such as pharmacists.

QUALITY & EDUCATION

Enhances the quality and productivity of our clinical trials program through training and standardization.

HOW DO DRUGS GET TESTED?

PHASE I

Researchers test the safety and dosage of the treatment. The studies typically involve a small number of participants (20 – 80). Once a safe and effective dose is determined, the treatment moves on to the next phase.

PHASE II

A new treatment is tested in a larger group of people (up to 100), to determine if the new treatment has an effect on a certain cancer, and to learn how the new treatment affects the human body.

PHASE III

Researchers use randomization testing to compare the new treatment (or new use of a treatment) with the current standard of care.
