Dr. Patricia Shaw

Dr. Patricia ShawOvarian cancer––“the disease that whispers”––claims 70% of the 2,300 Canadian women diagnosed each year.

For cancer researchers like Dr. Patricia Shaw and the team at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the goal is early detection. Dr. Shaw started the Ovarian Tissue Bank and Database to help researchers work together to figure out how the disease develops in the first place, and who is at risk.

“My goal is to identify the patterns in ovarian cancer that will lead to early detection and better treatments.”

Dr. Shaw is a pathologist, a specialist in diagnosing and classifying disease.

There are now several hundred ovarian cancer cases in the bank that she initiated, providing many thousands of research samples for study and tracking.

“Advances come through a team working with a common goal,” says Dr. Shaw.
