Techna Institute

Techna Institute

Techna is an institute of the University Health Network, in partnership with the University of Toronto, focused on the accelerated development and exploitation of technology for improved health. The Techna Institute is designed to shorten the time interval from technology discovery and development to application for the benefit of patients and the health care system. It will also stimulate and facilitate the innovation cycle through a continuum of clinically-driven innovation, technology & process development, and translational research.

Since the beginning of the Billion Dollar Challenge we have been able to recruit 15 leaders for key research areas, four full-time faculty, 39 affiliated faculty of physicians and scientists. We have also developed a 45-member core operations and technology development team (originally three staff members at Techna launch). This team includes technical project managers, engineers, and commercialization experts amongst others. The work at Techna has also generated 10 patents, 29 licensing opportunities, seven licensed products and five start-ups.
