Magnetic Resonance Guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) suite

Magnetic Resonance Guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) suite

The Magnetic Resonance guided Radiation Therapy (MRgRT) suite at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is the first-of-its-kind in Canada. Our facility consists of a full strength, open bore magnetic resonance imaging device on rails, which moves between a linear accelerator and a High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy suite. It is the only facility in Canada where MR guided brachytherapy is available and the first facility containing an HDR brachytherapy suite, MRI and linear accelerators in the same suite.

MRgRT combines medical imaging with radiation therapy (RT) to allow for a more precise visualization of internal bodily structures immediately before or during radiation treatments. This lets the radiation treatment be more precise, maximizing the amount of radiation reaching the tumour while minimizing the amount of radiation reaching healthy tissues.

The MRgRT suite operates in a co-ordinated fashion to assure safe and efficient treatment for our patients. The improved precision that our suite offers enables our patients to have better outcomes and quality of life.
