After 42 years at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s Information Desk, Barb Tiano retired on Nov. 30.

The beloved receptionist began working at the Cancer Centre in 1975 and spent her entire career greeting patients and helping them along their cancer journeys.

"I just like people, and to be able to help them when they're anxious and scared, or feeling worn out and sick has kept me going," Barb told UHN News. "What you give you get back, and I've made some wonderful connections here over the years."

Barb became known for her sense of humour and holiday-themed sweaters and would dress up as an Elf every year for the Cancer Centre’s holiday parties.

"I like to have fun, break the ice and get people laughing despite why they're here," Barb said.

As well as being loved by patients and staff alike, Barb was also named CBC’s first “Torontonian of the Year” in 2015.

Even though she will miss The Princess Margaret, Barb is looking forward to spending time with her three grandchildren and volunteering in her neighbourhood near the zoo.

"At times it's been a real circus around here, so I think I'm well trained to volunteer at the zoo!" she said with a laugh.

A celebration tea was held for Barb on her last day to celebrate all the lives she has touched at The Princess Margaret. To read more about Barb visit UHN News
