Meet The Cancer Experts: Laurie Tucker and Sherry Sadeghi

Meet Laurie Tucker and Sherry Sadeghi. In their own words:

Laurie Tucker:

So, what we do is we help patients with side-effect appearance related to treatment of cancer.

So, loss of hair is one of the big things. In fact, many women tell us when they come in the door – you know, getting the diagnosis of having cancer is, like, scary, but losing their hair is even scarier.

Sherry Sadeghi:

When they walk in, they just start to cry. We listen to them because we can see they need to talk to someone that they understand.

Laurie:

We try to calm them down in a sense, where we tell them: "It's good. We've got you. We've got you this far, we're going to get you all the way."

The favourite part would definitely be when we find that perfect wig and we put it on them and they look back at us and they go: "Oh, OK. That's me."

Sherry:

We bring fashionable style. We don’t want them looking like a patient, so they feel good when they wear it.

Laurie:

That brings nothing but joy to me and to Sherry. I know we share that passion together.

Sherry:

Each patient has a different experience.

Laurie:

A woman came in once and she picked out a pink wig because that was going to be her wig – her treatment wig.
So when she came, every time for a treatment, I’d see this little pink wig bopping through the hospital and I knew it was her.

Sherry:

They leave here happy and with lots of hope.

Laurie:

I can't stress how important the wig salon is to patients.

Sherry:

You want to help people, that’s all. This is one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had.
