Meet The Cancer Experts: Dr. Fei-Fei Liu

Dr. Fei-Fei Liu, Chief of the Radiation Medicine Program, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
Meet Dr. Fei-Fei Liu. In her own words:

My name is Dr. Fei-Fei Liu, I'm the Chief of the Radiation Medicine Program here at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

It's really an honour and a privilege to look after patients because within a few minutes of interaction, our patients are sharing with us the most intimate details related to the course of their illness at a time when they're most vulnerable.

Over my three decades of career here, the practice of medicine overall and specifically Radiation Oncology has been completely transformative.

As an example, when I started out, we were delivering very simple, box fields of radiation therapy, huge volumes, but, then over the course of the recent ten to fifteen years, that has really evolved significantly with the introduction of a lot of the new technologies. So that we're really able to sculpt the doses extremely well.

So then the question is where is the next phase of this transformation?

The other angle on that is related to the use of artificial intelligence and the whole realm of machine learning algorithms, deep neural networks, so the next challenge to us is how are we going to use that information and really improve outcomes for our patients.
