John: When will there be a product that will take away cancer tumors?

We went to Dr. Jonathan Irish, head of surgical oncology at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, to tell us more about the process behind personalized cancer treatment.

Dr. Irish: Thanks John, great question. When are we going to have one product to control or cure cancer? So let's think about that.

First of all let's think about cancer. The word "cancer" actually describes a whole multitude of diseases. Of cancers arising in different organs, larynx cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, for example. Or coming from different cells within these organs. Even the cancer within a patient can change over time, and this is really the basis of personalized cancer medicine; is the fact that a cancer in one patient, even the same type of cancer, can be very different from another patient.

So while advances are being made in surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, we're not going to have one product that actually cures cancer. It's going to be a multitude of factors that cure the cancer, because the fact of the matter is that we have to recognize that each cancer has a different personality, and that's the whole foundation around personalized cancer medicine.
