Question: What is multiple myeloma?

We went to Dr. Donna Reece, Molly and David Bloom Chair in Multiple Myeloma Research, to tell us more about myeloma.

Dr. Reece: Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow and bone, which is a distant cousin of leukaemia and lymphoma. But, multiple myeloma has distinct characteristics, and most of the time people present with either a low red blood count, or bone damage.

I think one of the most important things to know is that there are some blockbuster new drugs that have been developed over the last few years that have lead to a much longer survival for patients who may live with this disease for many years now. That was not the case a decade ago.

As far as resources, there are supports available through Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and there is a national patient organization called Myeloma Canada, that can be located on the web.
