Can Canada's Largest Sport Conquer Cancer: The Leading Cause Of Death

02/04/2015  |  Events |  Posted by: Nick Taylor

On Monday 15th June 2015, two hundred and forty golfers and supporters of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, will hit the links to play golf, to be active participants in Canada's leading participatory sport, and to help one of the world's top 5 cancer research centres in their mission to "conquer cancer in our lifetime".

How appropriate that a sport, pass time or hobby, (whichever category you place yourself and "golf" in) that engages more Canadians of all ages, gender, geographic region and ability than any other will play a pivotal role in raising significant funds for important cancer research. Research to combat the leading cause of death among Canadians. Research to support the care of the 40% of Canadians that will one day be told "you have cancer".

In my role as the Chief Golf Officer at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, it was my responsibility to create and launch Golf to Conquer Cancer in June 2014 as a new strategic fundraising property for the Foundation. Among the more than 25,000 existing golf tournaments across Canada, how could our event stand out, be different, and engage an audience of supporters that could help raise significant funds in support of the cause.

It started with a great lead sponsor. Harry Rosen Inc., Canada's leading menswear fashion retailer is the Presenting Sponsor for Golf to Conquer Cancer. A company steeped in traditions of excellence, customer service and quality for over sixty years; we would borrow from their identity and culture and deliver a "best in class" premium golf event that would attract business leaders and entrepreneurs from both the private and public sector.

With the host course confirmed in late November 2013, and a committee of volunteer business leaders on board by the middle of January 2014, the event was SOLD OUT by the middle of May, a full month before the first tee shot at the inaugural event.

While welcoming the golfers and sponsors to the event that June morning, we were able to share that the impact made by their participation was significant. By the end of the day following an exciting silent and live auction which added to total revenues generated, we announced over $800,000.00 had been raised by the thirty founding foursomes and forty sponsors in support of Personalized Cancer Medicine at Princess Margaret.

Golf to Conquer Cancer was now firmly established as the most financially successful single day golf fundraiser for cancer research in all of Canada! So what comes next? How do you build from there, and continue to make an impact?

The 2nd annual event has expanded to include play at two exclusive private courses (Coppinwood & Granite Golf Club in Uxbridge, ON), effectively doubling the field of players from one hundred twenty to two hundred forty participants. All golfers will be treated to the same features and benefits as the inaugural event which included; a $1 Million Hole-In-One contest, a second Hole-In-One prize of a Jaguar F-Type Convertible, Made to Measure Suits as contest hole prizes, and Made to Measure Shirts for all participants along with custom fit drivers from partner TaylorMade and beautiful leather bags as parting gifts after the marche reception.

Along with the increased field of participants, the fundraising goal has also grown dramatically. The 2015 Golf to Conquer Cancer tournament aims to generate close to $1.5 Million in support of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

We are thrilled that so many of our sponsors, partners and participating foursomes from the inaugural event have returned already to participate in the 2nd annual event. Perhaps motivated by the additional benefits provided by partners from PGA of Ontario, both during and after the event. In fact, many golfers that were invited guests at the 2014 event were so impressed that they are supporting the tournament in 2015 with their own foursome!

Some of Canada's leading public and private businesses are supporting Golf to Conquer Cancer, and they will be represented by senior level executives on the day. If this sounds like the right golf tournament for you and your company to participate in, you are right it is the best event for you to support.
