Kirsh Humanitarian Awards - 2011 Winners

Congratulations to Mrs. Phyllis Russell and Dr. Hans Messner who are 2011 recipients of The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian Award!

The Gerald Kirsh Humanitarian Award recognizes the outstanding compassionate care provided at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) to patients and their families. The family of the late Gerald Kirsh established the awards as a tribute to the exceptional care they witnessed while he was undergoing treatment at The Princess Margaret. These awards help grateful cancer patients and their families express their thanks to the dedicated employees and volunteers who have provided special care during their treatment.

Every year we are amazed by the many heartfelt nominations completed by patients and their families and this year was no exception with 24 nominations submitted.  The ceremony took place on Monday, November 7th in a packed PMH Atrium filled with the nominees and their families being cheered on by patients, staff and volunteers.

Phyllis Russell has been a volunteer at The Princess Margaret for over 30 years and currently assists the Haematology Clinic. “She has a kind heart and always willing to hear you out…she is compassionate and understands people’s pain” are just a few words that were included in her nomination.

“He came to The Princess Margaret to work with patients and their families to help create a healthcare environment that is like a ‘home away from home”.  Dr. Hans Messner is an oncologist who has been providing compassionate patient care for over 34 years at The Princess Margaret.
